Sensemaking of Digital Transformation in Organizations - A Case Study
The increasing diffusion of digital technologies throughout industries and dimensions of life is transforming organizations. However, many organizations fail to develop a digital transformation strategy. This paper presents a theoretical sensemaking model of Digital Transformation (DT) and the preliminary outcomes of an ongoing study. The study is supported by socio-cognitive theories, including organizational sensemaking theory and its integration with technological frameworks to understand the development of DT in organizations. The findings of a pilot case study from the hotel industry provide evidence that this study could lead to a framework that could help understand DT from a socio-cognitive perspective. Additionally, the pilot case could be the basis for a broader framework, which could be used for other studies in this field, both for academics and practitioner
Geological raw materials from a mesolithic archaeological site in NW Portugal
This is an author’s version (C. Alves) and not the final published text.
The final published text can be found in:
Proceedings 2019, 24(1), 10; https://doi.org/10.3390/IECG2019-06222The present work concerns the study of geological raw materials obtained from an excavation site located in Serra da Cabreira (NW Portugal). The majority of the artifacts are made in quartz varieties (with minor occurrences of flint). Milky quartz is dominant, being similar to diverse occurrences of quartz veins in the immediate neighborhood. There are diverse other quartz varieties, indicating the possibility of locations farther away from the shelter. The study of geological raw materials can be seen as an important source of archaeological information, illustrating the evolution of past relationships between humans and geological resources, and also providing relevant information for the present and future, considering namely the extremely low environmental impact of the processing of raw materialsThe first author (Pedro Xavier) would like to thank the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology) for the Ph.D. scholarship, reference (SFRH/BD/120806/2016). Effect of long-range interaction on dynamic quantum phase transitions of an exactly solvable free-fermion model: non-analyticities at almost all times
In this work, we investigate quenches in a free-fermion chain with long-range
hopping which decay with the distance with an exponent and has range .
By exploring the exact solution of the model, we found that the dynamic free
energy is non-analytical, in the thermodynamic limit, whenever the sudden
quench crosses the equilibrium quantum critical point. We were able to
determine the non-analyticities of dynamic free energy at some critical
times by solving nonlinear equations. We also show that the
Yang-Lee-Fisher (YLF) zeros cross the real-time axis at those critical times.
We found that the number of nontrivial critical times, depends on
and . In particular, we show that for small and large the
dynamic free energy presents non-analyticities in any time interval , i.e., there are \emph{non-analyticities at almost all times}.
For the spacial case , we obtain the critical times in terms of a simple
expression of the model parameters and also show that is non-analytical
even for finite system under anti-periodic boundary condition, when we consider
some special values of quench parameters. We also show that, generically, the
first derivative of the dynamic free energy is discontinuous at the critical
time instant when the YLF zeros are non-degenerate. On the other hand, when
they become degenerate, all derivatives of exist at the associated
critical instant.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, further discussions were added in the

Structural aspects of Hamilton-Jacobi theory
In our previous papers [11,13] we showed that the Hamilton-Jacobi problem can
be regarded as a way to describe a given dynamics on a phase space manifold in
terms of a family of dynamics on a lower-dimensional manifold. We also showed
how constants of the motion help to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Here we
want to delve into this interpretation by considering the most general case: a
dynamical system on a manifold that is described in terms of a family of
dynamics (`slicing vector fields') on lower-dimensional manifolds. We identify
the relevant geometric structures that lead from this decomposition of the
dynamics to the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory, by considering special cases
like fibred manifolds and Hamiltonian dynamics, in the symplectic framework and
the Poisson one. We also show how a set of functions on a tangent bundle can
determine a second-order dynamics for which they are constants of the motion.Comment: 26 pages. Minor changes (some minor mistakes are corrected
On the identification of earlywood and latewood radial elastic modulus of Pinus pinaster by digital image correlation: a parametric analysis
This work addresses the reconstruction of strain gradient fields at the wood growth ring scale from full-field deformation measurements provided by digital image correlation. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the earlywood and latewood radial modulus of elasticity is assessed. Meso-scale tensile tests are carried out on Pinus pinaster Ait. Wooden specimens oriented in the radial–tangential plane under quasi-static loading conditions. A parametric analysis of the twodimensional digital image correlation extrinsic and intrinsic setting parameters is performed, in a balance between spatial resolution and resolution. It is shown that the parametric module is an effective way to quantitatively support the choice of digital image correlation parameters in the presence of the high deformation gradient fields generated by the structure–property relationships at the scale of observation. Under the assumption of a uniaxial tensile stress state, the spatial distribution of the radial elastic modulus across the growth rings is obtained. It is observed that the ratio of the radial modulus of elasticity between latewood and earlywood tissues can vary significantly as a function of the digital image correlation parameters. It is pointed out, however, that a convergence value can be systematically established. Effectively, earlywood and latewood stress–strain curves are obtained and elastic properties are determined assuming the converged digital image correlation setting parameters

Current status of using beaks to identify cephalopods: III International Workshop and training course on Cephalopod beaks, Faial island, Azores, April 2007
The identification of cephalopods using their beaks is still a difficult technique. To increase our knowledge of this technique and stimulate a new generation of beak experts, the III International beak workshop and training course was organized in Faial, Azores Islands in 2007. We briefly review the activities of the workshop, including the identification procedure of lower beaks of cephalopods from predators with emphasis on cetaceans, seals, fish and seabirds; provision of basic knowledge to young researchers interested in the study area; identification of recent developments in beak research; and discussion of the main problematic issues. The families that need particular attention are Brachioteuthidae, Chiroteuthidae, Cranchiidae, Cycloteuthidae, Mastigoteuthidae, Octopoteuthidae, Promachoteuthidae, Onychoteuthidae (particularly the genus Walvisteuthis), Mastigoteuthidae and Cirroteuthidae. The stable isotopic signature of beaks is capable of revealing new trophic relationships and migrations. Future work should focus on: a) obtaining more cephalopod material from research cruises; b) promoting a close and continuous collaboration between beak experts and cephalopod taxonomists and; c) developing new, and updated, beak guides
